Above & below the surface

Underwater yacht photography

Half-water shots that show the yacht above the surface and the sea below her, and underwater images of hull, toys and swimmers.

Half-water shot of M/Y My Dream with a jet ski, the sea surface splitting the frame

I’ve been a CMAS diving instructor since 1987, and between 1987 and 1990 I took part in four excavation campaigns on Greek and Roman wrecks off Sicily and Calabria. My underwater images have been published in diving magazines such as Mondo Sommerso, Diver and Tauchen.

A half-water image, also called split level, shows two worlds in one frame: the yacht on the surface and the clear water beneath her. It tells charter guests what swimming off the stern feels like.

I shoot from the water with an underwater housing, timed to calm sea, high sun and clear water, with swimmers or toys when the brief calls for them.

The photos on this page were taken for M/Y My Dream, alongside her exteriors, interiors, aerials and twilight shots.

Questions

What is a half-water photo?

A split-level image taken with the camera half above and half below the waterline, so the yacht and the sea beneath her appear in the same frame.

Can underwater shots be added to a normal yacht shoot?

Yes. They’re planned into the same day, when the sea is calm and the sun is high enough to light the water.

Are you qualified to work in the water?

Yes. I’ve been a CMAS diving instructor since 1987, with four campaigns on ancient wrecks behind me.
